This was without a doubt one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen! I like chick flicks, including the tear jerkers, but this movie spent two hours wandering aimlessly until finally putting the viewer out of their misery with a completely pointless ending (which was very different from the book's ending). It starts out with two people (soldier and student) meeting and hanging out over the course of a two week time period. You never get the feeling of love during this time- at the most, they have some chemistry. He goes back to his base in Germany, she goes back to school, and they write letters. During this time, 9/11 happens, conflict ensues, and she dumps him by post while he's fighting in Afghanistan (which is pretty much one of the worst things you can do to a person). She is also dumping him for someone that she loves in a more platonic way because she feels sorry for him and she likes his kid. (At least, this is the way the movie portrays it.) The movie tries to make her out to be some kind of angel, but what I saw was a selfish and impulsive person. With the exception of John’s father, all of the characters were two dimensional and uninteresting. Save your money- this movie is NOT worth it! -
Hated it. When was it going to end? On and On and no connection with the actors. Acting was good the dialog was weeeeekkk. 2 weeks of nothing and they were in love...didn't feel it at all. Good looking actors but bad looking movie.
The guy had not character (he did punch somone) and the girl was just a blond cutie, just not enough. Needed some heart felt drama to grab you but it never happened. Don't waste your money. -
I liked this movie and I will buy it in video when it comes out.
It kept my full attention and the story was very good and surprises you in the end.
Did not waste my money in going to see this film.
I highly recommend it. -
good movie, although it was a tear jerker. Didn't see what was coming in the movie! I wouldn't recommend anyone that has been in Iraq or Afghanistan go see it. It would bring back a lot of memories. It still is worth seeing if you don't have problems with that.

The characters in a Nicholas Sparks book would have fit well into a Shakespearean tragedy. A man and a woman, usually from opposite sides of the tracks, fall madly in love and spend a lot of time talking about how in love they are. Then, just when it seems like they might live happily ever after, fate steps in and slaps the lovers in the face, reminding them that love just isn't that easy. There's a major difference between Sparks and the Bard, though. Shakespeare wrote about other stuff, too, like fairies and tortured princes. Sparks just keeps rehashing the same story over and over.
Dear John is the latest Sparks' adaptation to hit the big screen, and wouldn't you know it? It looks like the rest of them. In this film, Channing Tatum plays the rough but sensitive soldier on leave who find love the Amanda Seyfried's girl from the other side of the bank account. Their whirlwind romance is cut short by 9/11 (how dare 9/11 do such a thing!), and the boy reenlists to fight the bad guys. Their relationship continues through letters until, well, you've seen the title, and if you know what a "Dear John" letter is (or if you've seen a Sparks movie before), you know things aren't going to end well.
You know this movie is going to be sappy as hell, based on the source material. But this movie isn't content to just stick with the central love story. This movie throws in so many subplots (like autism and cancer) and complications that eventually, whatever emotions you might have felt are overwhelmed. Not even the pretty leads or a good performance by the always-interesting Richard Jenkins can save this film.
Nicholas Sparks' adaptations are the film equivalent of Mad Libs. The framework of the story is the same as everything that came before it. Just change the names and diseases, and you have an instant tear jerker. But just because something works once doesn't mean you should repeat it. Dear John is one of those films that should be returned to sender. -
surprisingly good. very touching and kept me wanting more. the chemistry between them was magnanimous ! so romantic yet so sad. makes you want to fall in love the way people have forgotten to. sorry to say but total chick flick drama but worth watching. i would watch this again!

A "Dear John letter" is a letter written to a husband or boyfriend to inform him their relationship is over, usually because the author has found another lover. Dear John Letters are often written out of an inability or unwillingness to inform the man in person. The reverse situation, in which someone writes to their wife or girlfriend to break off the relationship, is referred to as a "Dear Jane letter".
It is really good film!I saw him when i was working in my paper writing service and it was something amazing!
